Designing with Burnt Orange: How to Keep Bold Palettes Refined

  • 2 min read

Orange is bold. Emotional. Warm. And when done right, unforgettable. But it’s also one of the easiest colors to overdo. For this wedding, the bride’s love for burnt orange became the foundation of the design. The challenge wasn’t incorporating it. It was refining it into something that felt elevated, nostalgic, and intentional.

Start With Tone, Not Just Color

Instead of a bright or overly saturated orange, we leaned into burnt orange and copper tones. Shades that naturally feel richer and more grounded. This subtle shift made all the difference. We paired it with:

  • Soft creams and ivories to balance the warmth

  • Fresh greenery to keep it organic

  • Gold accents to enhance the richness

The palette felt cohesive, not chaotic.

Layering for Depth

One of the biggest mistakes with bold color palettes is using a single tone throughout. Here, we incorporated:

  • Multiple shades of orange (rust, peach, copper)

  • White florals to break up the density

  • Textural greenery for movement

This layering created dimension. Making the design feel curated rather than flat.

Vintage Meets Whimsical

The overall direction leaned into an old charm, vintage aesthetic with a touch of whimsy. We achieved this through:

  • Classic ivory furniture with ornate detailing

  • Soft draping to diffuse the space

  • Hanging accents that added lightness and movement

  • Candlelight to create a dreamy glow

The combination felt nostalgic without being dated.

Designing for Intimacy

Because the wedding was more intimate, every detail mattered more. Instead of scaling down the design, we focused on:

  • Creating a strong focal point with the stage

  • Keeping guest tables cohesive but not overdone

  • Ensuring every angle felt intentional and complete

Smaller weddings don’t need less design... they need more thoughtful design.

The Takeaway

If you’re drawn to bold colors like orange, the goal isn’t to dilute them. It’s to:

  • Choose the right tones

  • Balance with neutrals

  • Layer with intention

  • Design for feeling, not just aesthetics

That’s what transforms a color into an experience.
